Carlsberg goes full ‘jumpers for goalposts’
Created by Fold7, a Carlsberg outdoor activation is turning unused advertising spaces across UK cities into playable football goals.
Football advertising of late has been glamorous, high production, action-packed, and usually basking in celebrity endorsements. Carlsberg’s ‘Goal Posters’, however, is something of a back-to-basics approach.
The campaign sees simple green posters carrying the outline of a goal, transforming an ordinary wall into somewhere people can stop and have a kick-about.
Installations appeared at destinations including Sutton Walk and Shoreditch Tunnels in London and Bridge Street in Manchester. There is no complicated technology, app, or registration process. A passer-by only needs a football and a willingness to join in.

It's a line that imagined the ultimate version of familiar experiences, from pubs and flatmates to football teams and customer service.
The joke was always that, if Carlsberg were responsible, the result would probably be the best in the world.
‘Goal Posters’, then, is an interesting brand statement. It offers a more low-fi, hands-on interpretation of that premise. Instead of suggesting that Carlsberg would produce the biggest or most spectacular football commercial (we’re looking at you Adidas), it asks what the brand would do with the advertising space itself.
As well as revisiting the brand’s tongue-in-cheek confidence, the campaign plays to contemporary expectations. Brands are increasingly expected to provide something useful, entertaining or memorable rather than simply occupy a space.
Here, Carlsberg pleases local communities, while defining itself outside the footballing glamour that many recoil from.
Research-based
The campaign follows research commissioned by Carlsberg, which found that 75% of adults expected to watch football during the summer, while almost a third had not played a kick-about in more than six months.
Jessica Stacey, senior brand manager at Carlsberg, captured the tension: “If Carlsberg did football, everybody would get to enjoy a summer kick-about. For the 2nd of our 3 activations bringing back the iconic “If Carlsberg did...” platform, we took inspiration from a childhood classic: jumpers as goalposts.
“During the World Cup, it felt like football had become easier to watch than it was to play. So we turned unused ad spaces across UK cities into playable goals, giving fans the chance to get involved rather than just spectate. No celebrities. No big endorsements. Just a poster, a football and the joy of a kick-about.”
The activation has generated over 1,500 pieces of PR coverage and became the inspiration for a film that’s now running across VOD, social and online video as well as partner ads with a series of creators.
