Hide your shame under your jacket, dear reader
We get a few quirky campaigns pinged our way at Creative Moment, and this one was frankly irresistible.
Pioneering freelance creatives Susie Mcfazdean and Helena Smith very kindly wrote to us about their shameless side hustle creating reusable book covers designed to outright encourage incognito smut.
“As self-confessed ‘romantasy’ lovers, we had the idea of SmutSmugglers—reusable book covers that let you read your smut incognito. Because with hashtag #SmutTok garnering over 4 billion searches, we know it’s not just us who need them,” they explained.
Quite the market, I opined, now sold on the business model, as well as the ‘lolz’.

What's all this about smuggling then?
SmutSmugglers is essentially a small brand that makes reusable book jackets (covers) designed specifically for readers of “smut” — the playful term for spicy, erotic, or romantasy romance novels. Shout out to designer Paul Farthing, who gave the book covers their sex appeal.
The core idea is to let people read these books in public (on the train, in a café, while travelling, etc.) without drawing attention or getting awkward stares from the often very explicit or suggestive original covers.
(Indeed, such puritanical killjoys still exist in the current year.)
Feisty feedback
Aficionados of the scandalous products took the time to recommend sterling works like Sarah J. Maas’s ACOTAR series, or (insert any Jilly Cooper novel), tomes that often sport blush-inducing sensual artwork that can make readers feel self-conscious in shared spaces, like the London Underground.
Do what you will with that information.
