Splendid lights up Chester to celebrate Giffgaff Broadband with special guests
Splendid Communications took on the Christmas Lights switch-ons, with an epic broadband switch-on to mark the launch of giffgaff’s new full fibre broadband.
They turned up the volume on 6th November as iconic boyband, Five, took a break from its nationwide stadium tour to push the switch-on button in Chester, creating an unforgettable night of community, connection and chart-topping hits.
The event celebrated Chester-based giffgaff member, Tao Chang, whose home became one of the first in the UK to go live on giffgaff’s broadband.
The band and Tao pressed a giant switch-on button, activating an incredible neon light installation on Tao’s home. Tao then headed to the local pub, which was also lit up in neon, to watch Five do an intimate performance of a couple of its biggest anthems - Keep on Movin’ and If Ya Getting Down – for 100 lucky guests.
Guests were also treated to ‘bytes’ to eat, drinks and a DJ set from Chester-born DJ and Radio 6 presenter, Nemone Metaxas. The evening captured giffgaff’s community spirit in action, proving that nostalgia, local pride and a boyband-led broadband switch-on make for one unforgettable night.
The activation came from research revealing that over half (53%) of Brits experience broadband issues at least twice a month, with more than 340,000 people in the North West missing out on gig tickets¹ due to poor broadband.
Natalie Cutton, giffgaff Broadband product director, said: “We’ve built our mobile offering and now our broadband around our members to develop a product that meets their needs – simple, fair value and flexible broadband. So, who better to help us celebrate our official launch than our members, including Tao and his family and friends. We lit up Chester and Five put on quite the show to mark an exciting milestone for giffgaff as we launch broadband across the UK. The energy was electric, the Wi-Fi unshakeable, and the only thing dropping all night was the beat.”

Splendid Communications developed and delivered the creative idea, and delivered end to end campaign delivery, spanning event production, talent management, press office, and social amplification, with content from the night positioning giffgaff as a fresh challenger in the broadband space: one that celebrates connection in every sense.
Alec Samways, CEO of Splendid Communications, commented: “The giffgaff Broadband Switch-On Party reimagined what a tech launch can be - turning connection into culture, nostalgia into headlines, and one bloke’s broadband switch-on into a national talking point. It’s a great example of how we create conversations that count.”
