Wilson Defyer makes the player the hero in latest work by Codea Studio

Modern tennis = faster opponents, longer rallies, and shrinking margins for error.

When Wilson briefed Codea Studio on the Defyer (a tour-validated racket engineered for elite players who play relentlessly on the offence), the expected response would have been a high-octane piece built on speed, power and athletic bravado.

The Barcelona-based studio chose a different path entirely: one where slowness carries more weight than speed, stillness more tension than movement, and the racket itself bears as much authority as the player holding it.

Wilson’s latest franchise was born out of a specific tension in modern tennis: faster opponents, longer rallies, and shrinking margins for hesitation or error have made passive adaptation an inadequate response. Thus, the Defyer was positioned as the answer to that tension, a tool that allows players to attack those conditions directly.

Defiance. Impatience. Precision. Control.

The category’s typical output for this type of project would be a piece based on the player’s fierceness. With rapid-fire cuts, technical vocabulary, bravado, grit and everything in between. Which is exactly why Codea Studio went the other way completely.

Instead of displaying a frantic array of movements, the studio focused on a single shot: the serve.

The goal was to capture the aggression behind the product and the style of its target audience through a curated, delicate lens: highlighting red as a leitmotif and favouring suspended, slow-motion shots.

In terms of VO, the studio managed to counter another fundamental convention in sports advertising: the athlete is always the hero, while the product merely enables.

That’s why they decided to give voice to the racket itself. That way, the Defyer doesn’t assist dominance; it embodies it. Defiance, impatience, precision, control: every quality normally attributed to the player was transferred to the object.

The combination of both aspects creates a piece that, though faithful to the initial brief, translates its key attributes into a more poetic and elevated language, capable of delivering the core qualities of the product in a novel way that, just as the product name implies, defies the whole category.
