Coinbase’s impressive video game ad casts you as the NPC who can break free

Coinbase has upped its own high standards in subversive, system-baiting creative with a video game-style film that takes aim at Big Finance.

Coinbase’s latest brand film, created by Isle of Any and directed by Oscar Hudson through MJZ, debuted during the 98th Academy Awards broadcast. It imagines the financial system as a joyless, low‑resolution video game where most people exist as non‑playable characters (NPCs), endlessly looping through dull routines.

Filmed with minimal effects, ‘Your Way Out’ follows an unquestioning NPC who suddenly has an epiphany moment, and stops following the ‘script’, making a break for financial autonomy.

The visual language leans heavily on early console aesthetics with flattened CGI stylings, and rigid choreography featuring deliberately mechanical movement. It’s slightly reminiscent of the memes in which real people mimic stilted video game characters, only on a grander scale.

Rather than leaning fully into CGI, the production opts for practical sets and stylised costumes, grounding the metaphor in something tactile and human. 

When the protagonist finally ‘escapes’, the freedom is matched by a more life-like rendering. Check out the BTS here.

Our Take

Coinbase isn’t afraid to stick it to the man, positioning cryptocurrency as a remedy to the inflationary, legacy services it associates the existing system with.

The brand first came to our attention with its very pessimistic ‘Broken Britain’ ad, a biting musical offering that paints modern Britain as a dystopian farce where "everything is fine" amid crumbling homes, soaring food bills, and wage stagnation.

The recent ad is a little more optimistic in tone, positioning its services as a way to opt out and break free. 

In an age of economic fatigue, that may be the most persuasive message of all.
